Backbone - The Tour
Posted 03 September 2016 - 10:18 PM
My husband and I had a fantastic night last night at the opening of Anthony's Backbone tour.
I was so happy to learn from his introduction to the new music that the new album was recorded like live. I have long said Anthony's live performances are always my favourite over the studio ones as the live vocal is recording level perfect but with an a injection of something more. Passion? Realism? Fire?! I'm hopeful this new method of recording will have that something more captured!
I also loved hearing they've done different versions of the songs focussing on the backbone. Who wants karaoke or simply a new recording of the same thing, seriously. I remember hearing John Farnham's recording of Help! by the Beatles and being enamoured with it. He'd done it as a ballad, slowed the tempo - more like John Lennon intended when he wrote it, before he was pressed to liven it up. It is a remarkable version and the feeling meant in the lyric, the melody, are so much more noticeable and powerful. From that time I have always loved hearing songs changed up and stripped back - so long as they are done well. Too often a different version means to remix it and throw a disco beat at it. Eeek! Not so here, here there is more care, thought and depth to the new version. I applaud so much Anthony's desire to rework these songs in a respectful way, out of his love of them. As happy as I was to learn Anthony had done different, stripped back versions, I was even happier to hear for myself last night how excellent they are!! All good song choices, all reworked in a positive way.
All the versions of the songs he's done have something special to them. The essence is still there but enhanced and I felt like the importance of the song's lyric and melody truly had been elevated.
No slight on the other songs or my enjoyment of them by me singling this one out, they were great too I simply can't remember the detail of them all from one listen, but I was especially drawn to his version of Britney's Sometimes. I thought it was particularly incredible. I had always liked that song but Anthony made it truly something else. Much more dynamic than the original, holding true to the song and the core melody but developing it further, making it much more strong, interesting and powerful. I immediately wanted to bottle that performance and replay it!! I was feeling like, can you do it again now please? I hope the CD can allow me to hear what I heard last night. Love.
My husband and I really enjoyed the new Backbone song. I think it's the one new original track so I want to mention my thoughts on it. Instantly likeable, great vibe to it. I'm looking forward to hearing it again when I get the CD. I'm sure we will play this track a lot. I hope Anthony writes more originals. I am still hoping for another all originals CD.
I'm so appreciative Anthony sang Heartbeat at the show. The husband and I both loved that song and thought it was a standout on A New a Chapter. Don't Tell Me. Rain. These are old friends so who can help but smile.
The ultimate and most obvious example of this is The Prayer but it's not only evident in that performance but in many of his others - no one I have heard emotes and builds a song like Anthony does. At the signing after the show I told him I wanted to say something genuinely on the level, that he emotes and builds a song better than anyone else. I don't know what he thought when I said that, whether he took it as genuinely as intended or like I was some [crazy] fan who'd love everything, but I did truly mean it. I'm pretty discerning and objective even when it comes to the things I like and there is a reason I think Anthony is as good as he is - he is that good. There are many artists who can sing the big notes and hit the crescendo of a great song, but that doesn't mean you will feel it or be enveloped in the experience of it. Anthony's voice and performance allow me to do that the most. It's hard to explain but he has the ultimate combination of everything in his voice and the way he uses it. There is magic. Goosebumps are formed. You feel it. It's not just the perfect pitch, broad range, long held notes, rich lower register, the big voice - it's the feel. I'm drawn in. I can feel the song building in my body. A crescendo is weakened without the build. A great build makes the crescendo rewarding, exhilarating. I need that build or I won't get the high at the top. Anthony gives you an incredible crescendo, that much is obvious, but to me the way he builds a song makes him amazing. It's one of the things he is the best at. Period.
Sometimes I wonder if verses are seen as the poor cousin to the chorus. The chorus can be strong and sometimes the verse can be weak, like it's a necessary step to the chorus. When Anthony performs I find that not the case and myself loving if not looking forward to the verses too. That's not me saying the chorus has lots it's contrast or purpose. It's saying Anthony makes verses rich and enjoyable in their own right. That's something special about him too. On the tracks where he goes right down in his low register in the verses it is so rich and thick and good it makes me freaking gooey.
Anywho, great show and we both said we loved Anthony's humour, stories, self deprecating humour and rapport with the crowd. It makes him personable and very likeable (I could imagine he and Tim would have friends in fits of giggles). We were both laughing and got the cacks. You do feel connected and part of the show. Some artists who've been around a while stop talking to the audience during shows except for the obligatory "Hi <insert town here>" and pre canned stories delivered in a way you know they're pre canned. You know, no ad lib so they don't seem like they're really aware of that specific audience. It makes me happy that Anthony is not one of those artists and very much one of those who interacts the most.
A very enjoyable evening and I hope Anthony felt happy at the end of what he said was a nervous night. He did such a great job he should absolutely be proud of his performance and the work he's put in on this tour and musical project. I now look forward to the release of the CD.
(Not a short post, apologies, but too much I wanted to say - not unlike me at all lol)

Thank You very much Jo for your review photo's & video's. I loved them all & it gives us a chance to relive the amazing experience we had watching Anthony's concert.
My grandson Trent his friend Carly & I went to OUR beautiful ANTHONY's #BACKBONE concert at Mt Pritchard on Saturday night. Carly has never seen Anthony before & she just wanted him to sing *THE PRAYER * I told her he may not sing it because he has a new album comming out on 16th September. She was blown away & so very happy when he did sing *The Prayer * as only OUR gorgeous ANTHONY can sing it. I have to agree with Carly it doesn't matter how many times I hear Anthony sing it it always gives me goosebumps on goosebumps. I truely believe and I know I say this every time OUR beautiful ANTHONY gets even better every time we see him.
Anthony's new album is even better than I expected even though I knew it would be sensational. The way he has stripped back the songs but still kept the melodies made the cover songs much better than the originals. Anthony is so very very talented not many artists could make an original song sound so much better than the original but Anthony can when he puts his own beautiful spin on them. The songs all become Anthony's songs.
Anthony's original song #BACKBONE which he wrote himself is really sensational. I LOVE it so much. I'm not very musical so its hard for me to describe exactly what he does with his songs I only know how much I really really LOVE them.I think seeing him performing LIVE is just the most beautiful thing in the world. Even Carly said to me " You can like Anthony's voice but watching him live is just so much better " I don't have to tell any of his fans that have seen Anthony perform LIVE that its an exquisite experience never to be forgotten & cherished forever. You just wish he would go on & on you never can get enough & don't want him to finish. Anthony is so much in the pocket ( or in the moment ) when he sings and the way he builds a beautiful song he takes us on the journey with him. I can't THANK Anthony enough for the joy & the pleasure he brings me when he sings. We're so very lucky to be his fans. When Anthony is on stage he's so energetic he draws you like a magnet with his gorgeous smile gorgeous eyes and friendly captivating personality. I haven't stopped smiling since his concert & I always stay on a high for such a long time after I've been to one of his live performances. Even my doctor always says she can tell as soon as I walk into her surgery that I have been to one of Anthony's concerts. As soon as she see's me she always says " You've been to an Anthony concert haven't you? " Anthony does that for me he's bought so much joy into my life & makes me feel so Happy & contented . He's changed my life for the better and also the many beautiful special giving friends that I have made because of Anthony have meant the world to me.
I have been asked which is my favourite song in the covers Anthony sang. Thats a really hard question because they were all magnificent,
I think my favourite at the moment & that often changes is
1. Un Pretty I think its because it really strikes a cord in me & Anthony's beautiful words before he sang it bought tears to my eyes. I also LOVED BACKBONE it was amazing because I had always LOVED the lyrics that Anthony writes he's such a talented writer. To this day I believe * A New Chapter * was the most beautiful album I have ever heard. I LOVED every song on it.
2 - Sometimes - Higher Love - Man in the mirror where very close behind.
3 - Don't Tell Me - Heartbeat - Dance with my Father - Father Figure I really really LOVE but honestly I really really LOVE every song on Anthony's new album.
Anthony you have created a MASTERPIECE with your album I really really hope you get all the success with it you deserve.
Did I mention that OUR beautiful ANTHONY looked so gorgeous & stunning in ever outfit he wore.
Anyone who hasn't gotten tickets for at least one of Anthony's concerts do yourself a BIG FAVOUR and get them. I promise you won't be sorry & you'll be feeling just like I am so Happy & Over the Moon after seeing OUR beautiful ANTHONY perform live.
Don't forget to order your copies of #BACKBONE at the concerts or with Sanity or JB Hi Fi or iTunes. Anthony is signing them which make them EXTRA special. I am so so EXCITED & can't wait to get mine & I have to buy more because I need them in the car as well as in the house & I am bound to wear them out so I will need extra copies. I also could get some early Christmas presents. How lucky would anyone getting an Anthony album be.
I would also love to mention just how amazing Susie always is & the beautiful relationship between them is so special. Susie is a very special lady too.
I would also like to THANK my beautiful friend Luana for taking us to & from the concert. That was so very kind of you. We really appreciated it.It was so wonderful catching up with my beautiful friends Kerry Ken Lina Jo & her friend and also seeing Diane again & meeting Alanna. I hope to see them & meet even more of Anthony beautiful friends at The Ball & Anthony's Revesby & Campbelltown concerts.
I will always FOLLOW LOVE & SUPPORT OUR beautiful ANTHONY and also OUR wonderful TIM. THANK YOU so much Anthony for your magnificent magical awesome beautiful music your cheeky & loving personality & for always being so incredable & caring with your fans it means the world to us. You're such a DARLING.

Just wanted to say that Anthony's show at the Palms last night was stunning. His rapport with the audience was sincere and his banter was hilarious. His voice....amazing. It was great to see three standing ovations....one for the Prayer, one at the end of the last song of the evening's second set and one after his encore. Deservedly so. A particular favourite for me was the interpretation last night of Whitney's 2 songs intertwined, sung with such heart and yearning and all the other songs were fantastic, with soaring high notes, great harmonies, beautiful piano accompaniment by Garth and an overall wonderful evening with Anthony performing for just over 2 hours. I would have loved to hang around for the signing, but the queue was so long, trailing out to the foyer by the time my husband and I came out. Luckily I had bought a signed copy from sanity. Thank you Anthony (and the band) for a fabulous evening. Pearl
