To this date Anthony Callea is the only Idol contestant to make the final 3 without being in the bottom 2 or 3 elimination episode throughout the course of the show.

Mark Holden invented the new concept -'Grand Royale' Touchdown for Anthony's performance of 'The Prayer'. This, to date, it remains the only 'Grand Royale' Touchdown given out by Mark Hold.

Dicko was left speechless after Anthony performed 'The Prayer'.

Some of the Judges Comments

Dicko: "Anthony, when we first saw you I think we critcised you a lot for being plastic and too ridgid and trained, over trained. What we were hoping is for you to have a little fun and un learn what you know. Clearly that is sinking in because for the second week running, you have torn it up and engaged the audience."

Mark: You've reached that critical mass. This time next year whether or not you are the Australian Idol, just like Shannon, you are going to have hits."

Marcia: "It's great to see you getting comfortable in your own skin, working the audience. I want to say, you go you Italian Stallion you."

Dicko: "I think you are growing. I think that was one of your better performances. You've got the looks, the voice and the moves. In the space of this competition you've got to find another gear, that's all."

'The Prayer' by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion

Some of the Judges Comments

Marcia: "Yes, Anthony, you brought a little class to the house tonight, know what I'm saying. As my patner said to you, it was a pleasure to sit in this room and hear you rehearse that. That was outstanding."

Dicko: "I don't know what to say, I really don't. That was ahhh...seroius. I think that was probably the finest performance I've seen on that stage in two years. Seriously mate, this competition is about defining moments. You just had yours because you may only be two feet tall, but tonight you are a giant, an absolute giant."

Marcia: "Dicko has given you a hard time through it all, but the one thing I can say about Dicko is that when it's on he says it's on. Thank you for that, That was outstanding."

Mark: Anthony, last week Marcia said, Mark why do you keep hassling this young amn? What more do you want from him? Well tonight man, I'm going to invent a new concept, seriously, this is the GRAND ROYALE man... that was a GRAND ROYALE TOUCH DOWN."

After receiving a standing ovation and then the judges comments, Anthony received another standing ovation from the audience. Andrew and James then spoke with Anthony.

Andrew: "Ah Anthony, you must be feeling alright/"

Anthony: "Yeah, I'm feeling good."

James: "Now, I mean, that was a song that's originally a duet, you sang it by yourself tonight, it's a classical piece in two different languages - did you think this week you'd take the easy option?"

Anthony: "I just wanted to do something totally different and what I love, so I'm glad it worked."

James: "Well there were people in the audience not only giving you a standing ovation at the end, a new concept was invented in Mark Holden's brain and also there were people crying. How's it make you feel as a performer when you see people you're performing for intears, for all the right reasons?"

Anthony: I think that's the ultimate response you want from an artist, ah from an audience as an artist - I'm glad I had that effect on people. Thank you."

Dicko: "I think you have an enormous amount of potential but you took the easy way out and when you take the easy way out it doesn't do you any favours. You pushed yourself last week and showed me particularily where you could go. Push yourself because I'm sorry, that was meaningless, meaningless from where I need you to go."

Mark: "Anthony, I loved where you took that, but I liked even more where you started from. The way you started that was brilliant mate, honest to god. Those low notes where you were starting in the bottom were so delux and where you took it, awesome dude. I got the tingles again."

Marcia: "Those low notes were so low down into the boom docks, fantatsic. I got goosebumps. Well done, well done."

Opera House Grandfinal Performance
21-11-2004

The 3-hour final was broadcast live on Network Ten and began with Top 30 finalist performing on the McDonald's unforgettable concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. Adrian Hood, Barry Southgate, Carlos Velazquez, Laurence Sorbello, Liza Schulberg and Ngaiire Joseph performed in the special outdoors concert and Joel Turner and the beat-boxer alliance, together with Flynn were also among those performing on the night. Judge Marcia Hines also performed, singing the track "Ain't Nobody" from her album. Close to 3000 members of the public attended the outdoors concert, with another 2000 family, celebrities, fans, music industry heavyweights and other VIPs seated in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House.

Finalists Anthony and Casey then arrived, complete with police escort, in a white stretch Porsche limo to the Sydney Opera House. A spectacular fireworks display then lit the skies over the harbour especially for the arrival of the final two.

In the second half of the telecast, the Top 12 Idol contestants performed songs from the series individually and then together with the other two finalists.

Casey then performed 'Symphony of Life' live on stage individually and then Anthony sang 'The Prayer'. The finalists did not perform any new songs on the night. All the Idol finalists then joined in a medley of Australian hits live during the television event accompanied by Musical director John Foreman and a twenty-eight-piece band, and a special appearance by last year's Australian Idol Guy Sebastian.

Running 30 minutes overtime, Anthony and Casey finally appeared together on the stage for the announcement of the winner. Host James Mathison and Andrew G then announced, in a nail-biting finale to the extraordinary series, that Casey Donovan was Australia's next Australian Idol. The clearly ecstatic winner thanked her fans, family, the judges and supporters. Anthony commended Casey for her talent and thanked everyone for their support.

The newly crowned Australian Idol then took to the stage performing "Listen With Your Heart'" the debut single that is to be released next Monday, 29 November, and is also available for instant download from the BigPond Music website. After the performance Casey was joined on stage by the other Idol contestants and runner-up Anthony.

For this second series of Idol, the Grand Finale remains the highest rated Idol show in all series grand finals to date.

Australian Idol runner-up Anthony Callea has signed a recording contract with Sony BMG.

The pint-sized popstar was pipped at the post by 16-year-old Sydney schoolgirl Casey Donovan in Sunday night's Idol final.

But the 21-year-old from Melbourne will release a debut single next month, followed by his debut album, after securing the contract.

"When I was told the news earlier [yesterday] I was absolutely speechless," Callea said.

"This is an absolute dream come true and I can't wait to get into the studio and start recording."

He thanked the company and "all my fans for their loyal support".

His first single as a solo artist will be a version of The Prayer, the song which became his trademark during the reality talent quest.

It will hit the airwaves on December 6 and retail stores on December 19.

Sony BMG Australia chief executive Denis Handlin said he looked forward to working with Callea.

"His impressive performances on Australian Idol and the fervour with which the Australian public have responded to him demonstrate that this talented young man has an incredible future," Mr Handlin said.

"Anthony has an assurance surrounding his performances that is rare in someone so young and a clear vision for his musical future."
