Tennis Rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer Unite for Flood Victims

IN a fortnight, they may well be facing off with a slice of tennis history on the line.
But on Sunday, the two dominant figures of men's tennis, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, traded blows on Rod Laver Arena and no one cared who won.

The Australian Open, which starts at Melbourne Park on Monday, will no doubt have its usual share of tense moments and angry outbursts, jubilation and disappointment.

But, before all that, a clutch of the world's best - and certainly best-paid - players graced the main showcase court for a lighthearted exhibition of their sport.

It raised almost $2 million to help repair some of the damage caused by Australia's devastating floods.

"We can't bring back the lives that have been lost, but we can take away some of the stress," women's singles tournament favourite Kim Clijsters said.

And as Australia's top men's and women's singles hopes Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur noted, it was also a timely reminder - before they shoulder the hopes of a nation - that there are more important things in life.

"It brings home that tennis isn't that significant when there's a lot of lives threatened," Hewitt said.

Queenslander Stosur was warmed by the show of support both from the sellout crowd and tennis stars including Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic, Justine Henin, Vera Zvonareva, Victoria Azarenka, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Andy Murray.

"We love what we do, but there's far greater things going on in the world. So if we can all come together and support something like (relief from) these floods, I think it's great," Stosur said.

Amid much banter and hi-jinks, Stosur and Clijsters played a few points in earnest in what was perhaps a prelude to a potential semi-final clash.

Fifth seed Stosur is bidding to become the nation's first women's singles champion since Chris O'Neil in 1978.

Nadal and Federer also briefly went shot for shot, giving a taste of the most likely men's final match-up.

Nadal is seeking to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slam titles simultaneously, while Federer is out to defend his 2010 victory and stretch his record collection of major trophies to 17.

Federer will begin his defence against Slovak Lukas Lacko on Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

Australians in action on the opening day are Jarmila Groth, Jelena Dokic, Peter Luczak and Olivia Rogowska.

WITH fame and talent (in most cases) some would say star guests at the poker challenge might have already been dealt a good hand.
But that didn't stop them trying their luck at the tables of Melbourne's Crown Casino.

Challengers with deep pockets were greeted by skimpily dressed dancing girls, getting them in the mood for a night of fun.

Those trying their luck included celebrity chef Pete Evans, singer Anthony Callea and radio host Meike Buchan.

Rugby hunk Danny Cipriani, ordered by Melbourne Rebels bosses to tone down his party lifestyle, also made an appearance - but wouldn't pose with the girls.

Proceeds usually go to the Shane Warne Foundation but he announced the cash would go to Variety to help children who have been affected by the floods in Queensland.

Ke$ha Washes her Hair for Mardi Gras

http://www.samesame....-Mardi-Gras.htm

Pop starlet Ke$ha’s hair looks surprisingly good in her Mardi Gras ‘Say Something’ video, fueling rumours that the Tik Tok singer does actually clean herself with a bath or shower sometimes.

But seriously… she’s lending her support to Mardi Gras and the Aussie fight for same-sex marriage in the video below:

Ke$ha’s on the line-up for the Future Music Festival, so she’ll be in Brisbane during the day on Saturday 5 March. Will Mardi Gras fly her down to their big party that night? She’s set to play the following day at Perth’s Future Music Festival, so the scheduling would be tight. As always, Mardi Gras are keeping the guest acts a secret until the party night.

STARS SAY SOMETHING

Ke$ha’s just one of an increasing number of big names who have recorded a Mardi Gras ‘Say Something’ video message.

Australian celebrities including Ruby Rose, Matthew Mitcham, Molly Meldrum, Anthony Callea and many more are wishing Sydney a Happy Mardi Gras.

Australian GLBT advocates have joined in too, making their voice heard on issues of equality and marriage, and the New Mardi Gras crew are promising more stars’ contributions will be unveiled in the coming days.

Their videos are being shared on the Mardi Gras Facebook page and will be included in the Foxtel live broadcast of the Parade.

Top 10 Mardi Gras 'Say Something' Videos
SameSame.com.au
By Matt Akersten
5-3-2011

http://www.samesame....hing-videos.htm

Dozens of celebrities, Sydney scene queens, lobbyists, drag divas and LGBTI community icons alike all chose to ‘Say Something’ this Mardi Gras with their own video message.

Here’s our countdown of the best – including the most controversial.

#10 – Sam Sparro

The international chart-topper and former Harbour party performer Sam Sparro’s brief message is a shout-out for equality.

“For thousands of years, we’ve been making beautiful things for the world to enjoy,” says the singer of his gay brethren.

#9 – Dannii Minogue

X-Factor UK judge and new mum Dannii Minogue says she’s bugged by people saying “that’s gay” to mean something bad – as she knows those words can really hurt people.

“What everyone’s asking for is equality,” she wisely points out, then urges us all to be more conscious of the words we’re using in conversation.

“Something that kind of bugs me is when I hear people say ‘oh that’s gay’ as if meaning, in a light-hearted way… but words can hurt people,” she says.

“I think we just need to be really careful about the words we use and what we say and how they can affect others.”

#8 – Summer Salt

“The world will come and watch our drag shows, laugh at our TV shows, let us do their hair… goodness knows, they’ll do everything except respect our love.”

This video from Oxford Street drag diva Summer Salt really said something – go girl go!

#7 – Alex Greenwich

Australian Marriage Equality’s Alex Greenwich always has something to say – gay marriage now!

He’s encouraging us all to sign the petition on Facebook which will be delivered to Canberra in time for next year’s Mardi Gras. See and sign the petition here.

#6 – Brendan Maclean

We always enjoy talented musician and Triple J DJ Brendan Maclean’s original songs and cover versions made with love, so we were pleased to see he got his mini-guitar out for his very sweet Say Something video:

#5 – “Dear Gaystream!”

After a YouTube video promoting the Mardi Gras Party featured mostly just gym-fit young shirtless guys, this sweary response aimed to remind the festival crew that diversity is a foundation of Mardi Gras.

“Mardi Gras has implored us to ‘Say Something’ this year – to take back the festival and make it our own – I couldn’t agree more,” explains Brian Walker-Catchpole.

“I’ve chosen to say something about the way we represent ourselves and in doing so have realized that the best way to participate in the representation debate is to do the representing yourself. Happy DIY Mardi Gras motherfuckers!”

Contains coarse language:

#4 – DJ Feisty

A touching Say Something video from DJ Feisty reminding us how much love there is around us.

It’s been a difficult year for Feisty following the sad loss of her long-time mate DJ Mandy Rollins. Below, she thanks her community for its wonderful support when the unthinkable happened.

#3 – Anthony Callea

Out Aussie singer Anthony Callea’s message was heart-felt. Noting that he and his partner live happy, uncloseted lives, he then pointed out that it hadn’t been an easy journey for him getting to this point.

“It was at times a painful rollercoaster of emotions. Everyone’s journey is different, and a lot of those emotions of guilt, shame and confusion come from the expectations society puts on us, which we burden ourselves with.”

#2 – Ke$ha

Hard-partying Ke$ha got her message across in mid-February and hers is the most popular Say Something video on YouTube with an impressive 68,048 hits.

The glitter queen says it’s crazy to her that same-sex partners can’t legally marry in Australia. “Open all your hearts and support equality for all loving couples,” she requested. “We are how we are – and we’re fucking proud of it!”

#1 – Kylie Minogue

But no matter how many views Ke$ha gets, our number one must be Kylie, who delighted us with a surprise backstage Say Something message just a few days ago.

“There should be no homophobia anywhere in the world,” the mighty Aphrodite told her adoring gay fans. “Love is love is love…”

Molly Rocks up to Another Opening
The Age
Suzanne Carbone
11-4-2011

http://www.theage.co...0410-1d9b7.html

MOLLY Um Meldrum gave guided tours at the opening of the Tutankhamun exhibition at the Melbourne Museum last Thursday, christening a gold-embroidered jacket sparkling with hieroglyphics and pharaohs that he has been saving for an Egyptian day since the 1980s.

Molly opted for his usual rock'n'roll shabby chic on Saturday for the opening of Rock of Ages at the Comedy Theatre.

A section of Exhibition Street was blocked for VIP arrivals in limos and taxis, the closure made possible by the Melbourne City Council.

As Myer chief Bernie Brookes says: ''Australia needs more lord mayors like Robert Doyle.''

Music identities were on parade, Daryl Braithwaite joining Red Symons, Mark Holden, Brian Mannix, Glenn A. Baker and Anthony Callea. Kate Ceberano was there and her brother, Phil, performed '80s songs with his band at the after-party at the Plaza Ballroom. He's married to the musical's publicist, Angela Ceberano.

Singer Rocks Melbourne
The West Australian
Jacqui Bahr
11-4-2011

http://au.news.yahoo...ocks-melbourne/

The Australian premiere of the musical, Rock of Ages, starring Perth's Justin Burford won a standing ovation and rapturous applause in Melbourne on Saturday night.

Burford, who fronts Perth band End of Fashion, proved his acting and vocal chops in his starring role as wannabe rocker Drew, alongside stage beauty Amy Lehpamer.

The euphoric mood spurred on by the fun and high-powered Broadway hit full of popular 80s power ballads, was continued at the after-party.

Hundreds of guests descended on the opulent Plaza Ballroom to celebrate opening night. Celebrity guests included Molly Meldrum Daryl Braithwaite, Kate Ceberano, Australian Idol graduates Anthony Callea and Rob Mills and, of course, the cast.

Burford told Access All Areas he was nervous but overcame it to give it his all on stage and had a great time.

The musical will come to Perth. Dates are yet to be announced.

The writer was a guest of the show's producers

Bruno Mars, a Party Boat to Remember
The Daily Telegraph
Kathy McCabe Music
18-4-2011

http://www.dailytele...0-1226040593346

GUESTS on the Warner Music Australia boat cruise for Bruno Mars last week were intrigued by the presence of a very fit-looking Anthony Callea.

The pop star has been missing from the music scene for the past few years, concentrating on television and stage work, but is now working on his first studio record in five years. Callea revealed he has been writing with hitmakers in LA since engaging celebrity manager Mark Byrne.

Could his new album be out on Warners instead of his post-Idol label Sony later this year?

Also on the cruise and dancing up a storm was sweet Stan Walker who has also just returned from LA where he recorded his new single Loud for Sony.

Anthony Callea with Oscar.

More than 10,000 dogs - and a pig - united yesterday for the RSPCA's Million Paws Walk.

ZIVA the Great Dane isn't accustomed to canine challengers at her Nar Nar Goon home, but yesterday she found it was the little yappy dogs with a Napoleon complex you had to look out for at Albert Park Lake.

They'd run up courageously in a barking frenzy, only to be met with an expression of mild amusement as she strode past, careful not to squash them with her giant paws.

The blue harlequin Great Dane walked a lap of the five-kilometre lake course with her owners, Carol Smith and son Rylan, 14, along with about 10,000 other dogs and their 17,000 human companions yesterday in the Million Paws Walk.

The annual fund-raiser for the RSPCA is the biggest event on the social calendar for dog owners and their charges.

The lake's black swans retreated to the safety of the water to avoid the parade of all varieties of pooch, from fluffy handbag-sized dogs in pink woolly jumpers to the muzzled butch breeds with spiked collars.

Some owners decided to show off - or humiliate - their pets in sunflower and bumblebee costumes, Collingwood coats, woolly turtlenecks or fur-lined jackets.

Regardless of their attire or neatly combed coats, most dogs delighted in splashing through the puddles and mud, then slopping paw prints on their owners. The Dalmatians appeared to multiply as mud-splattered white-coated dogs blended in with them.

''I don't think there was a clean dog in sight - or an owner,'' RSPCA spokesman Tim Pilgrim said.

''We were a bit worried about the weather, but the dog-loving community have shown us they will come out to support us in rain, hail or shine.''

In a re-enactment of the movie Babe, there was a major upset in the competition arena when a small pig called Polly outshone all the canine competitors to win the best trick competition with her fetching, hand-shaking and agility skills.

Singer Anthony Callea put his diamante-collared Labrador Oscar through the agility course in a celebrity event.

The dog was adopted from the RSPCA after being rescued as a puppy when he was found tied with barbed wire with his tail cut off .

''Now he is living the life of luxury,'' Callea said.

While working sheepdogs demonstrated their herding abilities in the arena, another dog aspiring to join the workforce received some training working the crowd.

Ross Jackson's young Labrador Neptune wore his L-plates to show he was in training to become a customs dog, although yesterday he enjoyed a day of strictly social sniffing.

''He's very affectionate and loves being around all the other dogs,'' his Cranbourne owner said of the third customs dog he has had in his care.

Was it hard to let the dogs go when they got their government jobs?

''Not at all, as you just get another one and you constantly have puppies,'' he said.

JOY 94.9 is about to be air-jacked by Australia's highest profile gay couple; Anthony Callea and Tim Campbell.

JOY's regular Thursday Breakfast hosts, Andy and Adrian, are on leave, so for the next 4 weeks join Anthony and Tim on Thursday's from 6:30 am, as they take over the station.
This is the first time the dynamic duo have worked together on-air and we are sure they will bring us a fascinating insight into their relationship, celebrity lifestyle and life as Australian entertainers.

While Tim Campbell has entertained audiences across the nation, through TV dramas, on stage, and by hosting national network television, JOY Breakfast may yet be his biggest challenge.

As for his partner in crime, Anthony Callea is about to find out what it is to be a radio announcer, and not rock-star. No mid-morning catch up with friends during the next month, Anthony will need all the vocal gymnastics he can muster.

Stockholm Pride invites you to the Party Night - five hours of pure ecstasy at the Kungsträdgården main stage on Saturday August 6.

We save the best for last and invite you to the grand finale of the Pride Festival. There will be a mixture of extravagant stage performances with lots of humor and glitz.

- Actually, the whole pride week builds up to this year's grand finale, which will be the biggest Stockholm Pride has ever done, says Stockholm Pride Festival Coordinator Magnus Lindner.

Several surprises await the audience on Saturday, but we can already reveal that the Ukrainian group Kazaky as well as Camela Leierth (SE) are ready for Saturday's show. There will also be performances by Familjen (SE), Ulrik Munther (SE), Christian Walz (SE), Adam Tyler (US), Tatiana (UK) and Anthony Callea (AUS).

- I'm really proud to play at Stockholm Pride; this is the funniest show I'm doing this summer! I have such a tremendous love for gay people, they are my best friends, says Camela Leierth.

ANTHONY Callea will preview long-awaited new songs in front of an adoring crowd in ... Sweden.

The Idol survivor (pictured left) has been quiet on the charts for the past few years as he pursued various television and radio opportunities.

But out of the blue, Callea was approached to headline the week-long Stockholm Pride celebrations next month.

The singer has been writing with a raft of hitmakers including Paul Mac and Black Eyed Peas producer DJ Poet and plans to road test new tunes for his Swedish audience.

Callea said he had spent the past three years crafting a new musical direction after beginning his career as a popera star with the fastest-selling Australian single, The Prayer.

He hopes to finish his comeback record later this year and has already had some interest from major labels having parted ways with his post-Idol home at Sony.

A huge fan of the US ratings hit The Voice starring Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine, Callea said he would love the chance to mentor new singing talent on Channel 9's Australian version, which could hit our screens later this year.

"Coming from that world, I know how it works on-screen and behind the screen," Callea said.

"And I wouldn't want to give false hope to contestants, to be honest. To get to the high point on a talent show happens really quickly and the fall happens even quicker.

"But I love this concept because it's about nurturing singers."

Callea certainly has a wealth of experience as he coached singers at his own studio before landing on Idol and also featured as one of the professionals teaming with celebrity amateurs on Seven's short-lived It Takes Two series.
